What did a Prisoner of War in the First World War eat?

Lieutenant Humble described the food at Strohen POW Camp in Germany, 1917.

‘Plate of what is supposed to be soup but really half boiled turnip and water. Two apples per day, cup of coffee at 9. Half a loaf of brown bread per week. I look ahead to the joyful home-coming after the war. How long I wonder? May I be given the health and strength to live over the months of captivity ahead of me’

He survived the war and had his long-anticipated home-coming.
